For the past 30 years here at SRE we have been tuning 'A' series engines, primarily using an engine dynomometer.
With the expansion and move to larger premises we made the decision to sell the old dynomometer and invest in a brand new rolling road. Using modern technology this system is less punishing on engines and also allows us to test the transmission and drivetrain,we have 2 large fans one blowing direct from outside giving us a fresh supply of clean air for more accurate repeatable tests.
Here at SRE we understand that its not just the final peak figure that is important but more emphasis is put in to achieving a broad power increase in toque and power throughout the rev range.
As well as the expected function of the rolling road to record torque and BHP, this rolling road has many more useful features.
The rolling road can still equate flywheel torque and BHP (like the bench dyno) by measuring transmission losses. No inflated figures here! We see around 13-18bhp transmission loss from 100bhp engine.
We use a wide band lambda for our mixture analysis which has a logging facility to compare fueling versus rpm.
For those cars with non-standard gear ratios, wheels/tyres, we have a very useful function for measuring actual road speed compared with speed displayed in car. This is also printed on an easy to read graph. This information can go some way to preventing fines and lost licences!
For mapping and serious "every last hp counts" tuning the rolling road can be set to hold any rpm/speed specified. The bhp and torque are displayed in 'real time' on a hand held computer. Changes made can be observed as they are implemented.
Another very clever function is its ability to simulate driving on a normal road. Tyre rolling resistance, car weight, and frontal area are all fed into the system. Also a gradient can be added. This function is useful for diagnosing problems while the car is under simulated loads. It is also good for getting a feel for gear changes/rpm drop.
